Smoking Salvia Divinorum
The latest naturally occurring substance to feel the full wrath of the legislator’s pen is Salvia Divinorum which is slowly being outlawed in a number of states in the US. While few have succeeded thus far – indeed two attempts to ban the drug at Senate level have failed rather miserably – it is clear that a full ban on Salvia Divinorum is just a matter of time.
But what has caused the legislators and campaigners in the banning states to feel so strongly about what is, after all, just a plant? Well, it’s not just a plant, and that’s the problem. Salvia Divinorum is the most potent naturally occurring hallucinogenic known, and users – whether smoking or taking the extract – will feel an intense, dreamlike experience lasting one or two hours at most. By all accounts Salvia Divinorum is as potent as LSD, a drug for which there is no question of legalization.
