Should Salvia be Taken Off the Streets?
There is, if the state legislators in California are to be believed, a new menace wandering the streets. It is a harmless plant called Salvia Divinorum, shy retiring cousin of the mint family and close relative of the Salvia plants that adorn many a perfect American garden..
This is not a sick parody of Day of the Triffids, this is 21st century America. When chewed or smoked Salvia is a hallucinogenic that causes slight disorientation and disembodiment. And state legislators have taken the plant’s continued legality as a personal affront on their lawmaking skills; so they’re going to do something about it.
Leading the charge against Salvia is Assemblyman Anthony Adams who has introduced a bill that will make it illegal to sell the plant or its concentrated extracts to people under the age of 18.
Despite Salvia’s not inconsiderable age and tradition, there is still very little known about it. This, Adams claims, is a good reason to ban the scourge from our streets.
