Just because Colin Kaepernick was named the starter for the New Orleans game didn’t signify the end of the quarterback controversy in San Francisco. No doubt if Kaepernick had floundered, Harbaugh would have replaced him in a minute.
Colin Kaepernick made the cut in the adverse environment of the Super Dome. Colin definitely isn’t as consistent as Alex Smith but that is a two sided sword. Alex isn’t going to make some of the mistakes that Colin makes but he isn’t going to make the big plays as well.
What really stood out tonight about the play of Colin Kaepernick was the ability to scramble. He kept so many plays alive that would have ended in a sack with Alex Smith. For sure the San Francisco defense helped to put a win in the books for San Francisco but the biggest outcome of the game was the play of Colin Kaepernick. Definitely decided who the quarterback of the present should be and also of the future.
Once you know you have a quarterback of the future and one that can handle the game right now it makes it easy to switch now. Remember that 2 weeks after the season is over the 49ers would have to pay Alex Smith an additional 8.5 million dollars to retain him. Is that the deciding factor? No. Harbaugh and owner Jed York are dedicated to winning the Super Bowl this year and whatever Quarterback can get you there will start.
For now the controversy is over. That will last until the first bad game Kaepernick has.
