Free Music Downloads a growing trend

Probably never in its wildest dreams would Sony have envisaged the moves it has recently been making: it has teamed up with both telephony giant Nokia and free music providers We7 to provide its catalogue for free music downloads. If that isn’t enough then read on. There’s more.

O2 and Vodafone are in talks with Napster; presumably these two companies are hot on the heels of Nokia’s “Comes With Music” promise to offer 1 year’s worth of music downloads to their luck customers.

24-7 Entertainment have been in talks with an Nordic provider and have been in talks with UK companies to offer a similar deal for unlimited music downloads.

So where is all this going? Sony’s move isn’t purely out of goodwill and benevolence and, it would seem likely that its long term plan is to return palindrome-like back to where it started with enormous profits. Quite how this might happen is unclear, but it will be fun to see if money can be made with unlimited music downloads
