Filesharing with torrents

File sharing and torrents are the flavor of the moment. Why are they so popular? Let’s take a look at what drives them.

Torrents are not the files that are shared, they are the much smaller ’signature’ files that are available for download from any number of file sharing websites. These torrents contain metadata about the files to be shared and about the tracker, the computer that coordinates the file distribution.

When a peer (a computer on the network, basically) wants to download files it must first obtain the torrents for the files or groups of files, and connect to the specified tracker. The tracker then tells the peer from which other peers to download the required pieces of the file (usually files are split into many identically-sized pieces of between 64 kB and 4 MB each). A piece with size greater than 512 kB will reduce the size of a torrent file for a very large payload, but is claimed to reduce the efficiency of the protocol.
